It took me over 50 years of living to get to a place of truly being awake with my eyes open and working every day to live my authentic self.
In Mastery of Self (that was my March book) he talks about How we can give up who we really are in exchange for who we think we should be and consequently we end up living a life that is not our own.
In the society that we live in we value people who have the most stuff, a certain title or job at work, drive a certain car, or live in a certain area that they are somehow more important than the rest. I know I am guilty of this in the past. We are all people who have gone through different circumstances in life that have led us to where we are now. How many times have you heard someone say they went to college to be a _____ (fill in the blank) they started doing that job, and they hate it? It actually made them physically ill. Or you buy the newest trendy item that is “the must-have” you get it, and you decide it’s not all that.
I have done that for sure and I specifically can tell you it happened a few years ago over a pair of shoes that were the “IT” trendy must have (they are cute don’t get me wrong) “golden goose” now these are the most uncomfortable shoes that are extremely expensive. I had one style I didn’t like them, and someone said there is a style that is better and more comfortable. Wanting to still fit in, I decided that I needed to buy that style. Guess what they are just as uncomfortable as the first ones. Because I wanted to fit in, I bought these shoes and ultimately wasted money. Now I will be taking them to my sister’s closet to maybe get some of that money back :). I honestly don’t think I would have ever purchased them most certainly not for what they cost, if I wasn’t trying to fit in and not live my authentic self. Don’t get me wrong I love nice things who doesn’t, but I guess what I’m saying, is it because you like it? or because you want to “fit in?" Because you want to be in with the "cool kids"….who decided they were cool anyway?
Here’s a thought you leave the house thinking you look really great and then someone makes a sarcastic comment “nice shirt “Before that everything was great and now this person’s sarcastic comment has raised doubt and then your internal voice starts to say they must be right and now you’re judging yourself.
I have actually come to the conclusion that sarcastic comments are not funny and actually very hurtful.
Here is the definition of sarcastic.
Marked by or given to using irony in order to mock or convey Think about it for a minute to mock or convey contempt that is in no way nice! We have all been sarcastic at times some people more so than others and then they will say to you “oh I’m just being sarcastic“. No actually it is hurtful and there is truth and teasing behind it. I am really trying to check myself to make sure I am not doing this hopefully you will think about it in a different way also.
Back to being wake with my eyes open! I guess what my thoughts and point is "are you living your truth or trying to fit in?" Are you living your authentic life? If you aren't what can you do to open your eyes and wake up? Also stop with the sarcastic comments they aren't kind!
Here is my favorite quote and use it often.
When you know better you do better -Maya Angelou
I am working every day to grow, learn, and live my authentic self.
